Montipora corals are a popular choice for reef aquariums, known for their vibrant colors and diverse growth forms. They are generally considered moderately easy to keep, but require specific conditions to thrive. Montipora corals are small polyp stony (SPS) corals that can be plating, encrusting, or branching.
Care Requirements:
- Lighting: Montipora corals prefer moderate to high lighting, often requiring T-5 fluorescent, LED, or metal halide lighting systems.
- Water Quality: Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial, including a stable pH, alkalinity, and calcium levels. Keeping phosphate and nitrate levels low is also important.
- Water Flow: Montipora corals benefit from moderate to strong, intermittent water flow, which can be achieved with powerheads, wavemakers, or water circulation pumps.
- Nutrient Supplementation: While Montipora corals can obtain nutrients through photosynthesis, they also benefit from supplemental feeding with micro-plankton, brine shrimp, or fine particulate foods.
- Calcium, Magnesium, and Strontium Supplementation: Regular supplementation of these elements is important for their continued vitality.
Placement:
- Plating and Branching Montipora: Can be placed in the top sections of the tank to receive optimal light and flow.
- Encrusting Montipora: Can be placed in the middle sections where light and flow are still sufficient.
- Bottom of the Tank: While less common, some Montipora can adapt to lower sections if adequate light and flow are provided.
Compatibility:
- Montipora corals are generally peaceful and can be placed near other non-aggressive coral species.
- However, it's important to provide ample space between Montipora corals as they can grow quickly under ideal conditions.
Types of Montipora:
- M. capricornis: Shaped like a vase.
- M. digitata: Generally a branching species.
- M. stellata: Has rough, irregular, upright plates.
- Other species: Encrusting.
