RARE Fish - The Devils Hole Pupfish

The Devil’s Hole Pupfish

Have you every heard of the Devil’s Hole Pupfish?  Chances are you have never seen it?  This critically endangered fish is found only in Devils Hole, a water-filled cavern in Nevada.  This small fish grows to 1.2 inches and colrs vary based on age and sex.  Males are bright metallic blue while females and juvenils are more yellow in color.

The pupfish consumes any available food resource at Devils Hole, including beetles, snails, algae and freshwater crustaceans.  It is preyed on by a predaceous diving beetle.  Reproduciton occurs year-round, with spikes in the spring and fall.  Females produce a few eggs and survivorship is low.  Individuals live 10 to 14 months.

Devils Hole is more then 430 feet deep, but pupfish are only found in the upper 80 feet.  A small rock shallow rock shelf provides critical feeding and spawning habitat for the pupfish.
