Marine biologists off the coast of Tenerife had an incredible surprise last week: an abyssal humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii)—a deep-sea species usually found 200–2,000 meters down—was spotted near the surface in broad daylight, possibly a first. No one knows why it surfaced (some speculate El Niño conditions could play a role), but the rare encounter was filmed, and after it died a few hours later, researchers brought it to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to study and learn more about this elusive, bioluminescent predator.
