How to Acclimate Your New Fish Purchased In Store

How to Acclimate Your New Fish Purchased In Store

Acclimation Instructions

In Store Purchases Only

These are general guidelines that will suffice for most fish, corals, and invertebrates in the majority of situations.  There are special creatures or situations that may require different acclimation procedures.  Do not hesitate to discuss with us prior to adding your fish to your aquarium.

Aquatica does not guarantee livestock purchased in store, but if one of your fish passes away we ask that you provide a sample of your water for testing.  If you bring in a water sample, we will work with you to find an equitable resolution in the event of a fish passing away.

What you need

Small bucket or sink

1 measuring cup (approximately 8 to 16 ounces)

Aquarium net

What you do

1.Turn off the lights in your tank

2.Test the water in your tank to ensure no ammonia and low nitrates (we offer free water tests in store)

3. Start by floating the bag in the tank water for about 10 minutes.  We float the bag so that the temperature of the water in the bag will match your aquarium.

4. Open the bag

5. Every 5 minutes for the next 30 minutes add 1/2 cup of water to the bag.  Increase or decrease the amount of water depending on the size of the fish.  Do not get any water from the bag into your aquarium.

6. After 30 minutes, it is time to net the fish.  There are many ways to net a fish.  One of the easy ways is to place the net on top of the bucket and pour the water and fish into the net.  The water should be in the bucket, and the fish in the net

7. Place the fish in the aquarium.  Throw away the leftover water.

8. You can turn the lights on after 2 hours.

9. Do not begin feeding the fish until the following day.
